Cheshire Homes commemorates World Disability Day

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh handed over equipments and accessories to 14 physically challenged persons here today.

At a function organized here at Cheshire Homes to commemorate the International Day of the Persons with Disabilities, the chief guest, Mr. K.K. Sharma, Advisor to the Administrator UT Chandigarh, commended the efforts of Cheshire Homes Chandigarh for empowering the physically challenged persons and making them self-reliant.

Mr Sharma called upon all sections of the civil society, government and other non-government organizations to work with persons with disabilities to achieve inclusive, sustainable, and equitable development.

Later he handed over six tricycles, one wheel chair, one bicycle, and six sewing machines to the needy.

Chairman of the Cheshire Homes Chandigarh, Gurdip Singh Deep informed that the Home was established in the city on 5th November 2002 in Sector 15 and was later shifted to a two-canal house in Sector 21A, provided by the Chandigarh Administration.

There are 19 inmates in this Home, and 17 of them have been gainfully employed and are able to lead independent life, Deep informed.

However, Cheshire Homes has identified nearly 600 physically challenged individuals belonging to the economically poor strata of the society, who are helped through the outreach programme, he added.

Dr. V.J.S. Vohra informed that Cheshire Homes which is a part of the international charity to help the disabled, was founded in 1948 by Lord Leonard Cheshire, and is spread over 55 countries of the world today.  In India the first Cheshire Home was established in Mumbai in 1955, and today there are 22 Homes across the country, including in Chandigarh.
