Cheshire Homes Chandigarh gifts 10 tricycle to physically challenged

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh observed the International Day for Persons with Disabilities here on Sunday, 1st December.

Dr. Raj Bahadur, Head Orthopaedic Department, PGIMER, Mr. Rajesh Jogpal, Director, Social Welfare, UT Chandigarh, and Mr. Goyal, Circle Head of Punjab National Bank, were the guests of honours.
Cheshire Homes Chandigarh presented 10 tricycles, three sewing machines and one each of bicycle, wheel chair, and set of crutches to the persons with disabilities during the occasion.

The UN International Day for Persons with Disabilities was observed with other partner organizations like Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown, Inner Wheel Club of Chandigarh Midtown, Association of Physically Handicapped of Chandigarh and Punjab, and the Punjab National Bank.

A team of ten doctors also examined over 100 physically challenged persons who were given free medicine.

On this occasion 15 rail travel concessional passes were also presented to physically challenged persons.

Gurdip Singh Deep, President Cheshire Homes Chandigarh said that ten percent of Indian population i.e. about 100 million persons are disabled either physically or mentally and over 23 million are employable.  In Chandigarh nearly 10,000 physically challenged persons are there and we are trying to help them by not only providing them shelter, but also help them develop special skills and make them employable.

World Disabled Day Tomorrow

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh will be observing the World Disabled Day tomorrow, December 1, at Sector 21, Chandigarh.
On this occasion four guests of honour would be present to interact with physically challenged, Dr. S.S. Gill, Vice Chancellor, Baba Farid Medical University; Dr. Raj Bahadur, Head of Orthpaedic Department, PGIMER; Mr. Rajesh Jogpal, Director Social Welfare, UT, Chandigarh; and Mr. j.K. Gupta, General Manager, Punjab National Bank.
The event is being supported by Inner Wheel Club and Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown, Association of Physically Handicapped Persons of Chandigarh and Punjab.
On this day besides distributing mobility appliances to the deserving, a team of 10 to 12 doctors would be conducting the medical camp for about 200 persons who are expected to attend the event tomorrow.
Rail concessional passes will also be distributed to those who have qualified the basic criteria.
Lunch arrangement for the entire team as well as the physically challenged persons have been made, according to Gurdip S. Deep, chairman of Cheshire Homes Chandigarh.

Break Barriers...Open Doors.


The next meeting of the Governing Body will be held on Tuesday, 1st October 2013 at 6pm at Cheshire Homes at  341, Sector 21A , Chandigarh. One of the important agenda point for discussion is celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, on 1st December 2013. 

This UN Day falls on Tuesday, 3rd December 2013, but we at Cheshire Homes would be observing this day on Sunday, 1st December 2013. 


This year's theme is 
 “Break barriers, open doors: for an inclusive society for all”

By 3 December 2013, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we will have the outcome document of the HLMDD, which would provide an blueprint for action and ideal platform to launch global efforts to help realize the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society and shape the future of development for all!


More than 1 billion people or 15% of the world population are living with disabilities - the world’s largest and most disadvantaged group - most of which, are in developing countries!

United Nations' (UN) International Day of Persons with Disabilities is annually held on December 3 to focus on issues that affect people with disabilities worldwide.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is coordinated by United Nations Enable, which works to support and promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. The symbol of Enable is the blue UN symbol and the word "enable". The UN symbol consists of an azimuthal equidistant projection of the globe centered on the North Pole surrounded by olive branches. The word "enable" is written entirely in lower case letters. The letter "e" is red and the other letters are blue.

AGM on 1st September

The Annual General Meeting of Cheshire Homes Chandigarh will be held at 341, Sector 21A, Chandigarh at 11am on Sunday, the 1st September 2013. 

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh Annual Awards 2012-13 Report

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh organized awards for recognizing the contribution of individuals, NGOs and corporate working for the cause of the disabled, on 17th March 2013.


This was the first Award distribution ceremony and it was held in association with the Social Welfare Department of Chandigarh Administration. Sh. Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Railway Minister was the Chief Guest and handed over the awards.

The awards were distributed in five different categories. The award for disabled person for excellence in chosen field was given to Mr. R.C. Sethi, IPS, award for individuals who contributed for the cause of the disabled was given to Mrs. Puja, the next award for working for employment of the disabled was presented to Umeed, a unit of Regional institute of Mentally Handicapped while award for vocational guidance and skill development went to the National Association for the Blind and the last award was Life time achievement award for service to the disabled which was given to Brigadier Dr. M.L. Kataria.

The awards were judged by the jury headed by Lt. Gen. Vijay Oberoi PVSM and its members were Prof. Dr. Raj Bahadur, Director & Principal, Govt. Medical College & Hospital, Sector – 32 and Mr. Rajesh Jogpal, Director Social Welfare, Chandigarh.

The function also saw a colourful cultural programme by specially abled persons and distribution of aids and appliances for 10 orthopaedically disabled persons which was sponsored by Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown.

These awards had been announced by Mrs. Revathy Rugmini, Director, South Asia, Leonard Cheshire Disability, on World Disability Day, last year.

In his presidential address, the Chief Guest Sh. Bansal appreciated the work being done by Cheshire Homes and recollected his association with Cheshire Home Chandigarh at its opening in Nov. 2002. He also approved a grant of Rs. 10 Lacs for the Cheshire Home under MPLADS for installation of a lift and a library the residents.

The media sponsors for the function were “The Tribune” and “Day & Night TV”.

Mr. Gurdip S. Deep, Chairman Cheshire Homes Chandigarh, said that “It is an honour to have been associated with such a noble cause”.

1st Cheshire Homes Awards 2013 for Differently-abled


Cheshire Homes Chandigarh invites nominations for the Awards for the Physically Challenged for 2013.

According to the President Gurdip Singh Deep, Cheshire Homes will be giving away five awards for individuals and organizations working for the cause of physically challenged in the tricity area.

The awards, he informed, were announced during the celebrations of the International Day for Disabled Persons in December, and will be conferred in five categories, namely, 

Individual-Disabled who has done extremely well in his/her chosen area of skills/profession.
Individual-Able/Disabled who has done distinguished work for the cause of the disabled.
NGO/Corporate who has done distinguished work for employment of disabled persons.
NGO/Corporate who has done distinguished work for education/skills/vocational training of disabled persons.
NGO/Corporate who has rendered distinguished financial support to the causes of the disabled persons.


The awards will be presented at a function on Sunday, 17th March 2013 at 11:30am at Bal Bhavan, Sector 23, Chandigarh.


Cheshire Homes Chandigarh is an affiliate of Cheshire Homes India and the Leonard Cheshire Disability, an international voluntary organization working for the disabled since 1948 in 55 countries. There are 24 Cheshire Homes in India since 1948.
