New Governing Council of Cheshire Homes Chandigarh elected

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh re-elected Gurdip S. Deep as its Chairman for 2014-16, with Raminder Kaur Panag as Vice Chairman, Maniki Deep as General Secretary and Mukesh Kumar Gupta as Treasurer. 

Other members of the Governing Council include Maj Gen (retd) Hardev Singh, Shaju Peter, Neena Singh, C.J. Singh, and Rama Gupta, with Maj Gen (retd) A.S. Kahlon, Chairman Emeritus as the ex-officio member.

Cheshire Homes, setup in November 2002 with the support of the Department of Social Welfare of Chandigarh Administration, houses 17 physically challenged inmates who are provided with all amenities and vocational training to become self-supporting, he informed.

Cheshire Homes had instituted Awards in 2013 for the individuals and organizations working for the physically challenged and had been supporting a number of them as a part of its outreach activities by holding medical checkup camps, and providing aids and appliances.

During 2013-14, nearly three dozen tricycles, wheel chairs, and bicycles, besides  innumerable prosthetic aids and railway concession passes were provided to the physically challenged.

Cheshire Homes gifts tricycles and wheel chair to physically challenged on Independence Day

For 12 years old Parminder Singh, 18 years old Gurdev Singh, and 10 years old Khushi, 15th August was a freedom from immobility.  

All the three are physically challenged who received tricycles and wheel chair to move around, thanks to the Cheshire Homes Chandigarh.

Director Social Welfare Rajesh Jogpal unfurled the national flag along with Mrs. Promila Chandra Mohan of SOREM, the governing council members of Cheshire Homes including Chairman Gurdip S. Deep, Vice Chairman Raminder Kaur Panag, General Secretary Maniki Deep, amongst other members and that of Inner Wheel Club of Chandigarh Midtown, and the neighbours in Sector 21. 

The best part was the involvement of the local residents in the celebrations who could meet with 20 residents of the Cheshire Homes, which is supported by the Department of Social Welfare Chandigarh Administration, Mr. Deep informed.

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh Awards 2014

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh honours two individuals and two institutions. 

On March 15, Cheshire Homes Chandigarh honored two individuals and two institutions at the second annual award function at Bal Bhawan.
Mr. V. Lalremthanga IAS, Secretary Social Welfare UT Administration Chandigarh gave away the awards and applauding Cheshire Homes efforts said that he was impressed by the people who are so passionately involved in helping the need in our community.


Shri Shamlal received award under the category ‘A disabled individual working for the cause of the disabled’, who is a part-time waterman with partial vision and with two visually challenged children, he has served to shine shoes of all 150 students at the Institute for the Blind week after week every Saturday for 10 years.
 Ms. Aishna Vashishth was honored under the category ‘Differently abled person who has excelled herself in her chosen field.’ In spite of hearing disability she has excelled in music, dance, gymnastics and even academics. She is highly awarded, three times by the President of India.
Society of Rehabilitation of Mentally Challenged (SOREM) was recognized for providing skills to the differently abled. It is a highly acclaimed NGO in the fields of sports, functional educational, physio, occupational and speech therapy imparting vocational skills to mentally challenged children in north India. The society is active for the 25 years, and Mrs. Promilla Chandra Mohan, received the Award on behalf of the SOREM.
Universal Disabled Caretaker Social Welfare Society also known as “Prabh Asra” was awarded under the category ‘NGO working for differently abled.’ For the last 10 years the society has rehabilitated thousands of persons, provided shelter, skills and social awareness.
According to Mr. Gurdip S. Deep, Chairman of Cheshire Homes, the awards this year had been extended to include candidates from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh besides Union Territory of Chandigarh.
On this occasion Cheshire Homes also distributed aids and appliances including three tricycles three calipers, one wheelchair and one sewing machine.
Earlier Gen.A.S. Kahlon, Chairman emeritus of Cheshire Homes Chandigarh and Chairman of the Awards 2014 Organisation Committee, welcomed the chief guest and expressed gratitude to the Directorate of Social Welfare, Rotary Club and Inner Wheel Club of Chandigarh Midtown, and the award sponsors for supporting the event.
Physically and mentally challenged children from The Institute for Blinds, Samarth, and Prayas presented a cultural program. It was a treat to watch the differently abled children excel in their performances.
Prominent people including Director Social Welfare Mr. Rajesh Jagpal, Maj. Gen. Rajinder Nath, Rotary and Inner Wheel members of Chandigarh Midtown were present.

Last Date for Awards' nominations

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh has extended the last date for sending in or recommending nominations for the Awards 2014 to 7th March 2014.

2nd Cheshire Homes Award 2014: Nominations Invited

Nominations are invited for the 2nd Cheshire Homes Chandigarh Award 2014.

Five awards shall be given to individuals and organizations working for the cause of physically challenged in the states of Panjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Union Territory of Chandigarh.

The Governing Council of the Cheshire Homes in its recent meeting has decided to extend the awards to the neighbouring three states also in the absence of any Cheshire Homes there.

The five categories for which nominations can be sent are :

  • Individual-Disabled who has done extremely well in his/her chosen area of skills/profession.
  • Individual-Able/Disabled who has done distinguished work for the cause of the disabled.
  • NGO/Corporate who has done distinguished work for employment of disabled persons.
  • NGO/Corporate who has done distinguished work for education/skills/vocational training of disabled persons.
  • NGO/Corporate who has rendered distinguished financial support to the causes of the disabled persons.
Terms and Conditions 
The terms of selection of Awardees are
(i) Persons connected with Cheshire Homes are not eligible.
(ii) Awardee at no. 1 can also be considered for a cash award if in BPL category.
(iii) All awardees will receive a citation and a memento.
(iv) 
The selection of awardees shall be from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and/or UT of Chandigarh.

Cheshire Homes Chandigarh is an affiliate of Cheshire Homes India and the Leonard Cheshire Disability, an international voluntary organization working for the disabled since 1948 in 55 countries. There are 24 Cheshire Homes in India since 1948.
